Every other year the IIDA (International Interior Design Association) Indiana Chapter holds their Avant Garb Fashion Show in Indianapolis, but this is not any ordinary fashion show. Teams for the event are made up of partnerships between manufacturers and either one company or employees from multiple companies in both Fort Wayne and Indianapolis. Each team of six or less members have the goal to create a fashion garment using their manufacturers’ unique and upcycled materials, which means that there are outfits constructed out of anything from rubber base to wallcovering.
The challenge doesn’t stop there.
Each Fashion Show has a different theme to give the teams’ creativity a starting point. This year’s theme was “Design Collide: “Where Personality and Color Collide””. At the Fashion Show’s Launch Party in November, each team was given a word and a color that had to be represented in their outfit. From the launch party to the big event, teams had a little over three months to complete their masterpiece.
Now that I have covered the basics of the IIDA Indiana Chapter’s Avant Garb Fashion Show, you might be asking yourself, “Where does Strahm Building Solutions play a part in this?” I (Sarah Pine), Lindsay Shutt and Val Lothamer all attended the 2014 IIDA Indiana Chapter Avant Garb Fashion Show in Indianapolis for the first time. Although Lindsay and Val were already involved in IIDA as members, we were attending the show to represent Strahm. We were absolutely amazed by the outfits that came down the runway and what these teams were able to accomplish with materials like carpet and ceramic tile. Not only were we stunned by the finished products, but we realized that this was a really fun way to represent your company as well as work closely with a manufacturer.
When discussion about the 2016 IIDA Indiana Chapter Avant Garb Fashion Show began, Lindsay, Val and I decided that we would really like to give this a shot and represent Strahm in a bigger way at this event. After deciding to commit to this, we partnered with our Tandus Centiva rep, Jen Maynard, and two other local interior designers, Cory Ayers (our model) from Vintage Archonics and Cally Williamson from Viridian Architectural Design. At the Launch Party in November, we randomly selected the color Tropical Splash and the word “gentle”. Now that we had our color and word, it was time to start working. Three months of working on a concept for our design, a video showing the process of creating our outfit and actually making the garment itself was not easy. By Friday, February 12th, our garment that consisted of carpet materials and luxury vinyl tile was complete and ready to head down that runway at The Crane Bay Event Center. Once again, there were some amazingly creative garments at this year’s fashion show. The event overall was a success and we truly enjoyed being a part of it.
